Figures published by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have revealed that around 5.4 million self-assessment taxpayers – 45 per cent of the total – had not filed their return by 4 January, illustrating the size of the busy season challenge facing accountants this year.
Many of the 4.5 million self-assessment taxpayers who are still to file will be expecting their accountant to do so on their behalf but, of course, a big proportion will not have provided their accountant with the information they need, leading to an unavoidable pile-up of work for accounting professionals across the UK.
While cloud accountancy packages and practice management packages provide some help through automation, busy season is still hugely labour-intensive.
This leaves accountancy firms having to choose between employing more staff than they strictly need throughout the year or trying to bring in temporary staff, which is obviously easier said than done.
Added to the mix this year, many firms will have staff off sick with covid-19 or whose ability to work is disrupted by having to home-school their children.
